namuk

The services, reuse, repair and rent, designed and partially implemented for namuk, focus on creating viable alternative systems for a clothing brands to fast fashion. Creating circular and user friendly solutions that encourage second and third hand usage of clothing items, creating a more sustainable solution to children's functional outdoor clothing. Using leverage points to make these services an option that people are increasingly using, while simultaneously educating on the need and benefits of changing our approach to clothing children.

Goal

Namuk is an outdoor clothing brand for children, who's main goal is to produce clothing that allows children to spend as much time outside as possible. As such they put a lot of effort to create long lasting items, that can withstand multiple kids. Wanting to be a clothing brand that does its best in being sustainable and protecting the earth for future generation, I worked on multiple programs for them that would support this.

Project Summary

One of the biggest problems that the fashion industry has as a whole is fast fashion, we have ended up in a cycle of subpar clothing being produced and sold for cheap, which results in them breaking and going out of fashion very fast and customers having to buy even more clothing. How can a clothing brand take active steps to fight against this and create systems that keeps clothing in use as long as possible, while it still being a viable business model for them? Taking namuk as a playground to research and test such possibilities, the end result was 3 services, that have been optimised to work for both customers and the buisness side of things. One such service is Reuse, which keeps clothing in circulation and finds new homes for them, working on one potential solution for clothing brands against fast fashion and encouraging second and third hand usage. In the same vein the Repair is in place, which makes sure that clothing can be kept functional for as long as possible. Both of these programs have ended up restructured on a logistics and workflow side, as well as have new approaches to including customers by redesigning the User Experience online through new Graphic User Interfaces.

Contribution

Process

Starting out by getting to know the company and and what systems they already have in place, I got a feeling of what leverage points existed to make sustainability efforts more focused. Researching existing programs, getting to know the users, creating surveys, prototypes and small experiments allowed me to work towards services that would fulfil users needs as well as save time and manpower for namuk. Reuse was already in it's infancy stages, but it seemed to be slow going, buying second hand clothing not really being a practice a typical namuk customer took part in.
